Conagra Brands Hits Mark in Q1, Reaffirms Fiscal 2027 Guidance

Conagra Brands, a leading packaged foods company, has reported a solid start to fiscal year 2027, despite a challenging operating environment. In its Q1 earnings call, the company's CEO John Brase outlined three key takeaways from the quarter: strong execution, tangible progress against priorities, and reaffirmed guidance for fiscal 2027.

On a segment basis, Conagra Brands reported a 0.6% decline in total dollar consumption during the quarter, with frozen foods experiencing a 0.7% drop in dollar sales despite a slightly better volume performance. However, some brands within this category, such as Birds Eye vegetables and Healthy Choice single-serve meals, delivered strong results, growing 7% and 8%, respectively.

In snacks, Conagra Brands saw dollar consumption remain flat despite a 3.9% decline in volume. Meat snacks reported growth, which more than offset pressure in the convenience store channel. This reinforced the company's confidence in its capabilities and portfolio of brands in this category.

One area where the company plans to focus increased investment is on Slim Jim, an iconic brand with strong consumer relevance but struggling sales. Conagra Brands will work aggressively to restore growth through improved merchandising and marketing efforts.

In staples, consumption trends improved sequentially as the impact from last year's strategic pricing actions waned. The company saw growth in tomatoes, chili, and pickles, which more than offset declines in whipped toppings and salad dressings.

Conagra Brands CEO John Brase emphasized that the company is committed to executing well despite a challenging environment. He expressed confidence in the company's ability to deliver on its fiscal 2027 guidance and highlighted the strength of its portfolio and the opportunities ahead.

The company's CFO, David Marberger, added that Conagra Brands delivered adjusted gross margin of 23.8%, adjusted operating margin of 11.5%, and adjusted EPS of $0.41, all ahead of expectations. These results demonstrate the company's ability to execute well in a difficult environment.

Conagra Brands' reaffirmed guidance for fiscal 2027 reflects its confidence in the company's strong execution and progress against priorities. The company is poised to navigate the challenges of the operating environment and deliver on its promises to shareholders and consumers alike.
