Duluth Holdings' Strong Pivot: 500 Basis Point Gross Margin Expansion and Brand Equity Focus
The first quarter of 2026 has been a significant period for Duluth Holdings, marked by a deliberate strategic pivot that has led to enhanced profitability and a renewed focus on brand equity.
According to the company's Q1 2027 conference call transcript, Duluth Holdings' President and Chief Executive Officer, Stephanie Pugliese, highlighted the importance of this pivot in restoring profitability through focusing on what makes their products special, resetting promotional cadence, driving operational excellence, and expense control.
The results of this effort have been impressive, with a gross margin expansion of over 500 basis points to 57.4% of net sales, driven by a reduction in total global promotional days by over 50% and a decrease in the depth of discount by 700 basis points. This has allowed full-price sales to grow by almost 14% and average unit retail by 17% year-over-year.
However, this intentional pullback on promotions has led to a decline in top-line revenues, with total global net sales declining by 4% compared to the same period last year. The direct channel was particularly affected, with a 6% decline in sales excluding wholesale, while retail recorded another positive quarter, with store net sales increasing 3% year-over-year.
Despite this near-term impact on top-line revenues, Duluth Holdings' focus on brand equity and long-term value has shown promise. The introduction of new marketing campaigns, such as the "Folks Who Work Their Butts Off" campaign, has resonated with the company's core audience and driven positive year-over-year sales growth for their men's Buck Naked collection.
The success of these initiatives has led to an extended plan for the "Folks Who Work Their Butts Off" campaign, which will be expanded across other legendary product lines, such as Firehose, and utilized as a sign-off across podcasts, video, and social channels. Additionally, the deployment of two strong category messages out in the market simultaneously has driven consumer engagement and elevated brand consideration.
As Duluth Holdings continues to execute its strategic pivot, investors will be watching closely for signs of sustained profitability and brand equity growth. The company's ability to balance short-term revenue declines with long-term value creation is a key factor that could drive success in the coming quarters.
