Flagstar Bank Accelerates Growth Trajectory with Record-Low Expenses and Robust Loan Production

Flagstar Bank recently reported its second quarter 2026 earnings, showcasing a remarkable turnaround in the company's growth trajectory. Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Joseph Otting highlighted the bank's progress across various key areas during the Q2 2026 earnings conference call.

The results demonstrate the bank's ability to execute on its strategic priorities, achieving profitability for the third consecutive quarter. Pre-provision net revenue increased by an impressive 51% compared to the previous quarter, with disciplined expense management playing a significant role in driving positive operating leverage. In fact, expenses declined by 3% during the second quarter.

Flagstar Bank's balance sheet saw a substantial growth of almost $600 million, marking an inflection point in its growth trajectory. Core deposits also experienced a notable increase of over $600 million while maintaining lower deposit costs. The bank's capital position remains strong, providing flexibility to support organic growth and return capital to shareholders.

One of the key focus areas for Flagstar Bank has been diversifying its loan portfolio through growing commercial & industrial (C&I) loans. This quarter, the bank delivered $2 billion in net C&I loan growth on record origination volumes of $2.8 billion. Notably, this is the fourth consecutive quarter of net C&I loan growth and the first quarter of overall loan growth since the fourth quarter of 2023.

Additionally, Flagstar Bank grew its C&I and private banking deposits by approximately $900 million during the second quarter. This demonstrates a clear commitment to strengthening its core deposit base while driving business growth.

The bank's efforts to reduce commercial real estate (CRE) exposure have also shown progress, with multifamily and CRE par payoffs totaling $1 billion this quarter.

As part of its strategic plan, Flagstar Bank announced a $250 million share buyback program, signaling the company's confidence in its long-term outlook. This demonstrates the bank's ability to balance growth objectives with a commitment to shareholder value.

The success achieved by Flagstar Bank is evident in its financial results and strategic initiatives. With a clear focus on driving business growth while maintaining discipline and control over expenses, the bank has set itself up for continued success in the years ahead.
