Heritage Financial Reports Strong Q2 Earnings, Eyes Continued Growth Amid Integration Progress

Heritage Financial, a leading financial institution, has reported impressive second-quarter earnings, with key highlights including a net interest margin increase of three basis points to 3.99% and total loan balances increasing by $26 million.

In a recent conference call, Bryan McDonald, President and CEO, emphasized the company's progress in integrating Kitsap Bank, citing late September as the target date for system conversion. The integration is expected to bring higher expenses initially, but Don Hinson, Chief Financial Officer, provided further insight on estimated expense levels post-conversion.

The second quarter saw a notable increase in loan originations, with yields on the loan portfolio remaining steady at 5.72%. However, elevated prepayments offset some of this production, resulting in a net decrease in total deposits by $210 million due to seasonal factors and withdrawals from a single deposit relationship.

Notably, the cost of Interest-Bearing deposits decreased to 1.67% from 1.71% in the prior quarter, largely driven by the full-quarter impact of the merger with Olympic Bancorp. Investment balances also decreased $36 million, primarily due to prepayments and maturities.

Don Hinson highlighted the successful execution of a small loss trade, selling $38 million of securities at a pre-tax loss of $217,000 and reinvesting the proceeds into higher-yielding securities. The yield on the investment portfolio increased 11 basis points, largely due to the full-quarter impact of acquiring the Olympic portfolio.

The company's income statement reflected most categories increasing from the prior quarter due to the merger. Net interest income benefited from an increase in the net interest margin and a decrease in the cost of deposits. The previously mentioned recovery of interest on non-accrual loans in the first quarter had a muted impact on net interest margin growth, with an eight basis point increase to 3.99%.

Heritage Financial's Q2 earnings showcase its continued growth amidst integration progress. With a focus on maintaining moderate pace and driven by new loans and repricing within the existing loan portfolio, the company remains committed to delivering strong financial performance.
