Scholastic's Q1 2027: A Strong Foundation for Growth
Despite being its smallest revenue quarter, Scholastic's fiscal 2027 first quarter has set a strong foundation for growth. In an earnings call held on September 24th, the company's leadership highlighted several key highlights from the quarter that demonstrate their commitment to driving stronger performance gains.
The quarter was marked by the seasonality of the business, with schools largely out of session and sales particularly light for the children's books and education divisions. However, despite this, Scholastic continued to invest in its growth priorities and advance strategic transformation across the company.
One area where the company is experiencing strong momentum is its book fairs business. Bookings and fair count are ahead of the prior year, and Scholastic continues to see traction in Christian schools and other extended formats as it expands the total addressable market for fairs by reaching new school communities.
According to Peter Warwick, President and Chief Executive Officer, "We are bullish about sustainable and profitable growth in fairs for three key reasons. First, the unique competitive advantages provided by our scale, brand, content, and operations. Second, the significant growth opportunities serving new kinds of schools and offering new types of fairs. Third, the strong operating leverage in this business."
The company's focus on execution through the fall while continuing to expand the reach of its highly differentiated book fairs business is expected to drive further growth in the coming quarters.
Additionally, Scholastic's trade publishing business is entering a very exciting second quarter and holiday selling season with a strong publishing schedule across its portfolio of global franchises, best-selling series, and new titles. The company has an extraordinary Harry Potter publishing program this fall ahead of the new HBO series premiering this Christmas.
With its fiscal 2027 priorities remaining unchanged, Scholastic is confident in the trajectory outlined in July and is affirming its full-year guidance. As Peter Warwick stated, "We remain 100% focused on driving stronger top and bottom-line performance this year and beyond."
