Selective Insurance Group Surpasses Expectations in Q2 2026 with Strong Operating ROE and Improved Margins

Yesterday, Selective Insurance Group posted its second quarter 2026 earnings press release, financial supplement, and investor presentation on the Investors section of selective.com. The company's Senior Vice President, Brad Wilson, kicked off the conference call, welcoming participants and outlining the key points to be discussed.

During the call, John Marchioni, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer, highlighted the company's achievements in Q2 2026. Selective celebrated its 100th anniversary and 50th year as a public company by ringing the Nasdaq closing bell in May. The company also opened its new corporate headquarters in Short Hills, New Jersey, which broadens its access to talent and positions it near transportation hubs.

Selective's Q2 2026 results were impressive, with a 13.7% operating return on common equity (ROE), led by excellent investment income growth of 18% year-over-year. Each insurance segment produced an underwriting profit, and the company's combined ratio improved 2.2 points from last year to 98%. The E&S segment remains strong, with a personal lines combined ratio of 94.1 for the first half of the year, ahead of the company's 95% target.

The Standard Commercial Lines segment experienced a decline in net premiums written by 5% during Q2 2026. However, this was attributed to actions taken to improve portfolio economics and long-term returns. Selective remains focused on improving margins and diversifying its business mix. The company continues to see growth opportunities in contractors, an industry vertical where it has proven expertise.

While the casualty-oriented nature of the contractors business has pressured performance in recent years, Selective is leveraging its tools and granular insights to drive higher renewal retention on its best-performing business and lower retention on underperforming business through appropriate rating actions. The execution of this strategy accelerated during Q2 2026, with retention in the best-performing renewal cohort remaining consistent at 89%, and retention in the worst-performing cohorts decreasing from 81% to 55%. Renewal rates also increased from 11.5% to 18%.

Patrick Brennan, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, highlighted the company's ability to deliver on its strategic goals during Q2 2026. Selective remains committed to disciplined growth and operational excellence, with a focus on improving margins and diversifying its business mix.

The company's performance in Q2 2026 demonstrates its ability to navigate the current insurance environment successfully. With a strong operating ROE and improved margins, Selective is well-positioned for continued success in the coming quarters."
