Sportsman's Warehouse Hits Its Mark in Q2 2026 Despite Macro Headwinds

Despite a challenging macroeconomic environment, Sportsman's Warehouse delivered a solid performance in the second quarter of 2026. In a recent conference call, CEO Paul Stone and CFO Jennifer Fall Jung shared the company's results, highlighting its ability to adapt quickly to changing market conditions.

The retailer reported same-store sales that were essentially flat compared to last year, which was in line with expectations. However, core customers continued to face pressure from elevated fuel prices, among other macroeconomic challenges. To counter this, Stone expressed pride in the team's swift response and adjustments made to meet customer needs.

One notable highlight of Q2 2026 was a nearly 7% increase in sales within the hunting and shooting sports department, driven by firearms and ammunition demand. This category saw continued strength, with event-driven factors influencing sales. In contrast, fishing department sales decreased by about 2%, although they were up nearly double digits on a two-year comp stack.

The negative impact of drought conditions was felt in the Western states' fishing sales, which resulted in mid-single-digit declines. Conversely, Eastern stores saw a mid-single-digit increase during Q2. The company remains optimistic about long-term growth potential in this category and has taken steps to ensure adequate inventory for the back half of the year.

The camping and soft lines departments experienced declines in Q2 2026 due to clean inventory levels and an improved fall assortment better aligned with core pursuits of hunting, fishing, and shooting sports. Although these categories have not turned positive yet, they are showing signs of improvement. Close management of inventory remains a priority for the company.

Total inventory is down by over $44 million compared to last year, reflecting efforts to ensure regional and seasonal relevance in merchandise flow. In-stocks at core locations have improved significantly, and category-level inventory levels are at their healthiest point in many years.

The e-commerce business grew nearly 3% in Q2 2026, led by fishing up 10% and hunting up 6%. This growth outpaced total sales for the ninth consecutive quarter, demonstrating the effectiveness of the company's omni-channel strategy. By providing a tailored online assortment and website improvements, Sportsman's Warehouse continues to enhance its customers' shopping experience across both in-store and online channels.

As Stone emphasized during the conference call, the core customer at Sportsman's Warehouse is passionate about the outdoors and trusts the retailer for local knowledge and product advice. To further position itself as a top choice for this segment, the company has reinforced its value proposition through a more promotional cadence than initially planned.

The outcome of these efforts is already visible in improved August trends within camping and soft lines departments. While they have not yet turned positive, the direction seems promising, highlighting the effectiveness of the company's strategy to focus on core pursuits while managing inventory levels for long-term efficiency.

As Sportsman's Warehouse looks ahead to the remainder of 2026, it is well-equipped to navigate ongoing macroeconomic challenges and capitalize on emerging opportunities in its markets. With a solid foundation in place and continued efforts to enhance customer experiences across both online and offline channels, the company is poised for further growth.

With this Q2 performance, Sportsman's Warehouse has demonstrated its resilience and adaptability in the face of adversity. As we look ahead, it will be interesting to see how the retailer continues to navigate the evolving landscape and build upon these promising results.
