Bio-Rad Sees Gradual Recovery in Life Science Market Amid Challenging End Markets
Bio-Rad, a leading developer and manufacturer of innovative biotechnology reagents and systems, recently reported its second quarter 2026 results. The company's total revenue for the period was approximately $651 million, marking a slight decline on both an as-reported and currency-neutral basis compared to the same period last year.
However, Bio-Rad's financial performance showed encouraging signs of stabilization in several key areas. The company's clinical diagnostics segment returned to modest growth, led by its blood typing portfolio. Quality Controls within this segment saw a notable increase, reflecting improved market conditions.
In the life science sector, results were affected by softness in the academic research market. Despite this, Bio-Rad reported encouraging signs of stabilization in biopharma, with early-stage indicators suggesting a gradual recovery in the broader industry. This improvement was most evident among later-stage and commercial-scale biotech customers.
"We've seen early signs of stabilization in the biopharma space," said Jon DiVincenzo, Bio-Rad's President and Chief Operating Officer, during the company's second quarter 2026 results conference call and webcast. "Consistent with broader industry commentary, we're seeing improvement among later-stage and commercial-scale biotech customers."
Additionally, process chromatography, which represents less than 5% of Bio-Rad's total annual revenues, was sequentially up but declined year-over-year as expected. The company attributed this decline to its niche position in the polishing step of bioprocessing contributing to revenue concentration from a select number of commercial therapeutics and vaccines.
Regionally, Americas remained soft due to continued pressure in the academic market. However, Bio-Rad saw improvement at the end of the quarter and expressed caution optimism as it entered the second half of the year. Asia Pacific, excluding China, grew 6% on a currency-neutral basis, with growth across most major product areas.
China, which represents approximately 6% of Bio-Rad's total revenue, declined in the high teens due to the timing of Quality Control orders and softer demand for life science instruments. Despite this decline, Bio-Rad maintained a positive outlook for its operations in Asia Pacific.
