Citizens Financial Group Continues Strong Momentum in Q3

Citizens Financial Group delivered another impressive quarter, as its Chairman and CEO Bruce Van Saun and CFO Aunoy Banerjee outlined during the company's Q3 2026 earnings conference call. The results reflect a strong momentum that continues to drive the company forward.

In a presentation filled with encouraging financial highlights, Van Saun emphasized the company's solid performance in the third quarter, citing an 8.5% sequential EPS growth and a 34% year-on-year increase. This was achieved alongside a robust return on tangible common equity (ROTC) of 15.1%, up from 13.9% in the second quarter.

The company's ability to maintain its strong operating leverage is also noteworthy, with a 1.8% sequential quarterly and a 5.3% year-over-year positive operating leverage. Total revenues hit a record high in Q3, driven by net interest income (NII) growth of 2.7% sequentially and an impressive 13% year-on-year.

Notably, the company's net interest margin (NIM) met expectations with a 2 basis point increase to 3.19%, positioning Citizens Financial Group for strong NIM expansion in Q4. Loans and deposits were flat as anticipated due to loan pull-forward into Q2 and seasonal deposit fluctuations.

Fees saw a slight decline, primarily attributed to volatile capital market conditions that pushed certain deals into Q4. However, the company remains optimistic about market conditions heading into Q4, with strong pipelines in mergers and acquisitions (M&A), which reached record levels. There is no indication of stress on loan portfolios due to current interest rates.

Credit metrics remain broadly positive, while capital, liquidity, and funding positions are robust. In response, the board authorized a 13% increase in the dividend to $0.52 per share and increased the capacity of the company's common share repurchase program to $1.95 billion, up by $1.3 billion.

Van Saun also highlighted progress on strategic initiatives across private banking and wealth management build-out, Reimagine the Bank (a Consumer NEXT branch project), attracting talent to commercial banking, and growing New York Metro presence. The company is dedicating significant resources to leveraging AI and implementing a strong cybersecurity framework and capabilities.

The overall outlook for Q4 remains positive, with Van Saun expressing confidence in both Q4 performance and the medium-term prospects. Despite expecting continued uncertainty and volatility in macro fundamentals, the company feels well-positioned for 2027 and beyond.
