Koppers Kicks into High Gear Despite Challenging Macro Backdrop

The third quarter of 2026 marked a resilient performance for Koppers, despite an unfavorable macro environment and rising input costs. According to the company's recent conference call transcript, the firm's investments in growth-oriented businesses have paid off, with solid performances from Performance Chemicals and Utility & Industrial Products.

Performance Chemicals delivered strong volume growth, driven by continued momentum in industrial applications and market share gains in residential business. This was particularly noteworthy given the neutral to slightly negative domestic residential environment. Meanwhile, Utility & Industrial Products continued to benefit from a healthy infrastructure market for utility poles.

However, Koppers' costs for coal tar, copper, diesel, freight, and other raw materials rose significantly during the quarter, outpacing price recoveries or cost reductions in other areas. This pressure on margins led the company to revise its earnings outlook for the remainder of 2026.

The impact of rising input costs was exacerbated by the absorption of higher raw material, additive, and logistics costs before full recovery through pricing. Despite this challenge, Koppers remains confident in delivering significant earnings improvement in 2027 and continued strong cash generation.

On a positive note, the company generated record year-to-date operating cash flow and free cash flow, completed another step in repositioning CMC with the end of distillation at Stickney, and delivered $42 million of year-over-year Catalyst benefits through September. Leroy Ball, CEO and Chair of Koppers, emphasized that significant pricing actions will take effect in January 2027, enabling the company to recover much of what it has absorbed this year.

Koppers' third-quarter sales reached $499 million, a 3% increase from the prior year, driven by volume growth in Performance Chemicals and Class I crosstie businesses. Adjusted EBITDA, however, declined 18% from the prior-year quarter due to higher raw material and logistics costs, as well as increased SG&A expenses.

In a show of resilience, Koppers has navigated a challenging macro backdrop with its strategic investments and cost-saving initiatives. As the company looks ahead to 2027, its confidence in delivering earnings improvement remains unwavering. With significant pricing actions on the horizon and continued strong cash generation, Koppers appears well-positioned for future growth and success.
