Cincinnati Financial Corporation Delivers Consistent Execution and Pricing Discipline in a Softening Market
Cincinnati Financial Corporation, a leading provider of property and casualty insurance, has delivered consistent execution and pricing discipline in the second quarter of 2026, according to its recent conference call transcript.
The company's net income for the second quarter was nearly $1.3 billion, including recognition of $882 million on an after-tax basis for the increase in fair value of equity securities still held. Non-GAAP operating income was $224 million for the quarter, compared with $311 million a year ago.
The company's property casualty combined ratio increased by 5.9 percentage points compared with second quarter last year, including an increase of 2.3 points for catastrophe losses. However, this was fairly consistent with the 87.8% reported through the first six months of 2026, which was also in line with the 87.7% reported through the first six months of 2025.
Cincinnati Financial's CEO, Steve Spray, stated that the company continues to execute its strategy consistently, including maintaining pricing discipline in a softening property casualty insurance market. The company's underwriters emphasize pricing and risk segmentation on a policy-by-policy basis, resulting in slowed growth but still at healthy levels.
The company's commercial lines grew net written premiums 3% with a 104.1% combined ratio that increased by 11.2 percentage points, including 4.9 points from higher catastrophe losses. Personal lines grew net written premiums 1%, impacted by lower new business premiums that reflect softening market conditions.
Excess and surplus lines grew net written premiums 8% and produced an excellent combined ratio of 90.5%. Cincinnati Re's second quarter 2026 net written premiums increased by 16%, with a combined ratio of 87.6%. The company's strategy to diversify risk through its global operations continues to pay off, as Cincinnati Global's combined ratio was 110.
The company believes that its focus on providing outstanding service and deep relationships with independent insurance agents will keep it well-positioned for long-term success in the softening market conditions. With a consistent track record of execution and pricing discipline, Cincinnati Financial Corporation is poised to continue delivering strong results despite market headwinds.
Cincinnati Financial's CFO, Mike Sewell, noted that the company's non-GAAP operating income was $224 million for the quarter, compared with $311 million a year ago. This reflects the company's ability to manage costs and maintain profitability in a challenging market environment.
