Delta Air Lines Soars Through Q3 2026 Despite Fuel Headwinds
Good morning, everyone, and welcome to the September Quarter 2026 Financial Results Conference Call. The company has delivered a stellar performance, showcasing its structural durability and strategic decisions made over the years.
In the September quarter, revenue grew 16%, with pre-tax profits of $1.5 billion, consistent with last year's results. Despite absorbing $1.6 billion of higher fuel costs, earnings came in at $1.72 per share on an operating margin of 9.4%. These impressive numbers reflect disciplined capital allocation and the durability of Delta's business model.
Operationally, the company has once again demonstrated industry-leading performance across key metrics, including on-time arrivals and customer satisfaction. Despite a challenging summer operating environment, Delta made good progress on weather recovery, with expectations to further improve recovery performance through the end of the year and into 2027.
CEO Ed Bastian praised the 100,000 members of the Delta team, calling them the company's greatest strength. He also highlighted that customers named Delta the best airline staff in North America for the fifth consecutive year by Skytrax World Airline Awards. In line with its philosophy of sharing success, the company has accrued $900 million towards next year's employee profit-sharing payout.
Looking ahead, demand remains strong, supported by a secular shift in consumer behavior. The top 40% of U.S. households are nearly $40 trillion wealthier than they were just a few years ago and increasingly prioritizing experiences, including travel. Air travel remains one of the best values in the consumer economy, with airfare still well below cumulative inflation over the last several years.
Delta's diversified revenue streams have enabled the company to navigate the current fuel headwinds. Premium growth remains robust, while Main Cabin trends are improving, reflecting a measured approach to growth and broader industry actions to reduce unprofitable capacity.
According to CEO Ed Bastian, 'We believe our underlying revenue strength is sustainable, giving strong preference for the Delta brand.' The company is well-positioned to recover higher fuel costs more quickly, even when prices eventually moderate. With many carriers struggling to earn their cost of capital before the run-up in fuel, Delta's performance is a testament to its resilience and strategic decisions.
Delta Air Lines continues to demonstrate its leadership position in the industry, delivering strong results despite challenging market conditions. The company's commitment to disciplined capital allocation and operational excellence has enabled it to navigate today's high fuel costs and maintain its competitive edge.
