Kayne Anderson BDC Thrives Amidst Market Uncertainty with Record Net Investment Income

In a market filled with uncertainty, Kayne Anderson BDC (KBDC) continues to thrive, reporting record net investment income of $0.46 per share in the third quarter of 2026.

According to Doug Goodwillie, Co-CEO of KBDC, this represents a dividend coverage ratio of 115% and an annualized return on equity based on net investment income of 11.7%. The company's board of directors has also declared a regular quarterly dividend of $0.40 per share for the fourth quarter, payable on January 19, 2027, to shareholders of record as of December 31, 2026.

The quarterly dividend represents an annualized dividend yield of approximately 10.2% based on KBDC's quarter-end net asset value (NAV) per share of $15.71. This is a testament to the company's commitment to providing stability and predictability for its shareholders, even in uncertain market conditions.

"We have remained confident in our ability to sustain the $0.40 quarterly dividend through 2026," Goodwillie said during the conference call. "A key reason for holding the dividend steady was to provide our shareholders with stability during an uncertain period in the interest rate cycle."

The company's net asset value per share declined by $0.29, or approximately 1.8%, from $16 at the end of the second quarter due to net realized and unrealized losses of $0.36 per share. However, this was partially offset by net investment income in excess of the dividend of $0.06 per share and $0.01 per share from accretive share repurchases.

More than 70% of the quarter's net realized and unrealized losses came from three investments: American Soccer, Centerline Communications, and Seagull Egg. Goodwillie acknowledged that these losses were "idiosyncratic" and did not represent any sort of connected credit story that KBDC can see.

Despite the increase in non-accruals, which still represents less than 6% of KBDC's overall portfolio at fair market value, Goodwillie expressed confidence in the company's ability to work through troubled assets historically. He pointed out that ArborWorks and Regiment have seen recoveries in recent periods.

KBCD's annualized return on equity based on net investment income of 11.7% is a strong indicator of its ability to consistently generate above-market spreads, currently averaging 565 basis points over the SOFR for the portfolio.

"Given this expectation, combined with our ability to consistently generate above-market spreads, we remain confident in our ability to maintain our base dividend going forward," Goodwillie said.

As the interest rate cycle continues to evolve, KBDC's focus on sustainability and predictability is more important than ever. The company's commitment to maintaining its quarterly dividend despite market uncertainty demonstrates its dedication to its shareholders and its confidence in its investment strategy."
