Knight-Swift Transportation Navigates Uncertain Market Conditions in Q1 2025

On April 23rd, Knight-Swift Transportation held its first quarter 2025 earnings call, providing a snapshot of the company's performance amidst uncertain market conditions.
The truckload market experienced positive momentum at the beginning of the quarter, with early bid season results and healthy volumes following the fourth quarter. However, severe weather in February contributed to a slowdown in volumes, while toxic tariffs and fluid trade policies brought a pause to the market's growth.
"The increased uncertainty among shippers and growing concern among consumers resulted in lower volumes and an absence of the typical seasonal build in March," said Adam Miller, Chief Executive Officer. "We are still achieving increases in the low to mid-single digit percentage range, but we're not seeing the increases build like we had originally anticipated."
The company's customers are adopting various strategies in response to the market uncertainty, with some pressing forward with little change, while others have already cut back or are cutting back on purchases, mostly centered around China. At this point, customers are expressing more concern around cost impacts of tariffs and less concern regarding demand from their customers.
Knight-Swift Transportation is focused on controlling what it can control, including tightening its equipment fleet by selling underutilized tractors and trailers, investing in new technology, raising the intensity around safety and claims, and reducing overhead costs. "We need to have the most efficient cost structure possible in order to be prepared for what could be a volatile environment in the near term," said Miller.
During the first half of April, market conditions have largely been stable with where the company exited the first quarter, but there is a wide range of possible paths forward from here. As Knight-Swift Transportation continues to navigate these uncertain times, its focus on efficiency and adaptability may prove to be key factors in driving success.
