Kura Sushi USA Cooks Up Record-Breaking Labor Leverage and Strong Q2 Earnings
Kura Sushi USA, Inc. recently wrapped up its fiscal second quarter 2026 with a bang, reporting better-than-expected comparable sales growth of 8.6% alongside record-breaking labor leverage.
The company's total sales for the quarter came in at $80 million, with 4.3% from positive traffic and an additional 4.3% attributed to price and mix increases. While cost of goods as a percentage of sales did experience some pressure, rising by 570 basis points compared to the prior year quarter, this was largely due to commodity inflation offsetting minor tariff relief.
A major highlight of the quarter was the impressive improvement in labor costs as a percentage of sales, which decreased by an unprecedented 410 basis points from last year's 34.8% to 30.7%. This significant decline can be attributed to operational initiatives and better sales leverage. In fact, Kura Sushi USA has already surpassed its initial goal of improving labor costs by 100 basis points, demonstrating the company's commitment to efficiency and profitability.
The restaurant chain also made notable strides in unit development during the quarter, opening one new location in Frisco, Texas, and four additional restaurants in Orange and Union City, California; Goodyear, Arizona; and Wellington, Florida. The openings have exceeded expectations, with fiscal 2026 shaping up to be a strong vintage following last year's performance.
Kura Sushi USA continues to prioritize its marketing strategy, focusing on IP collaborations that have proven successful in driving sales growth. Notably, the Kirby collaboration generated significant buzz and success, while Sanrio's popularity was instrumental in boosting February's sales figures. The company is now partnering with Jujutsu Kaisen for its third season release and plans to collaborate with Tamagotchi as part of its 30th anniversary celebration.
Another exciting development is the introduction of seat steering into the rewards program, which promises to enhance customer experience and drive engagement. With a strong performance in Q2 2026 under its belt, Kura Sushi USA is poised to continue its upward trajectory and achieve its goals for full-year comparable sales growth.
