Lowe's Delivers Strong Q2 Performance Despite Challenging Macro Environment

The home improvement giant, Lowe's, has reported a solid second quarter performance, with sales of $26 billion and comparable sales increasing by 0.2%. Despite the heightened competitive landscape, which saw competitors using tariff refunds to lower prices later in the quarter, the company remains optimistic about its Total Home strategy.

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Marvin Ellison praised the team's ability to effectively manage the business and remain agile in this environment. He noted that strong performance in Pro, Online, and Home services helped to offset persistent macro pressures, softer DIY discretionary spend, and challenging weather during Memorial Day weekend.

The company's Pro division delivered another quarter of growth, with professionals continuing to respond to Lowe's differentiated assortment, strong inventory position, dedicated service levels, fulfillment capabilities, and tailored digital experience. Ellison noted that the integration progress of Foundation Building Materials and Artisan Design Group has also been pleasing, positioning the company to grow share with larger Pro customers long term.

Online sales growth reached 15.7% this quarter, reflecting the continued benefits of Lowe's investments in the digital experience. These investments include tailored experiences on lowes.com and the mobile app, expanded visualization capabilities, and the ongoing growth of the online marketplace. The improved user experience, along with compelling value offered by loyalty programs, are driving increased conversion and enabling the company to respond to dynamic customer preferences.

The company's Home services division also delivered another quarter of growth as do it for me customers continue to engage with the simpler and more convenient experience created. Enhancements have improved conversion, cycle time, and customer satisfaction, giving confidence in Lowe's position to capture more of these larger projects when homeowners are ready to take them on.

While acknowledging that the near-term environment continues to be dynamic due to elevated fuel prices and broader economic uncertainty, Ellison noted that the long-term fundamentals supporting home improvement remain intact. Customers continue to tell Lowe's that they're being cautious about their spending and prioritizing where and when they invest in their homes.

Lowe's operational discipline enabled it to deliver better than expected flow-through while absorbing elevated fuel, transportation, energy, and other input costs, even excluding the impact of tariff refunds. The company's ability to effectively manage expenses has been crucial in navigating this challenging environment.
