Mercer International Sees Rocky Road Ahead as Q2 2026 Results Show Narrow Margins and Strategic Shifts

The pulp and paper industry continues to grapple with economic uncertainty and market volatility. Mercer International, a leading player in this space, has just released its second quarter 2026 earnings results, which reflect the challenges facing the sector.

Speaking on the conference call, Juan Carlos Bueno, President and CEO of Mercer International, highlighted the difficulties experienced by the company during the quarter. "We're currently working with advisors and actively evaluating strategic alternatives to enhance our liquidity and strengthen our balance sheet," he noted. This sentiment was echoed by CFO Richard Short, who added, "In response to persistent economic uncertainty and challenging market conditions, we are taking proactive steps to position ourselves for success."

Financially speaking, Mercer International's Q2 2026 results showed a significant decline in operating EBITDA, which was down $29 million from the previous quarter. This decrease was primarily driven by higher fiber costs in Germany and lower pulp prices. The company's Pulp Segment reported negative quarterly EBITDA of $13 million, while its Solid Wood Segment saw a loss of $8 million.

Despite these challenges, some positive trends were noted during the quarter. Softwood pulp realizations decreased slightly due to global economic headwinds, but this was offset by higher list prices in Europe and North America. Hardwood markets in China and North America showed improvement, with sales realizations increasing to $607 per ton from $564 per ton in the first quarter.

Production levels also saw some adjustments during Q2 2026. Mercer International's pulp production decreased to about 456,000 tons from 466,000 tons in the previous quarter. This was largely due to strategic reductions at its German pulp mills, which experienced economical fiber supply limitations. Pulp sales volumes also declined by around $21 million, primarily due to the timing of sales.

Looking ahead, Mercer International is gearing up for some planned maintenance downtime in Q3 2026. With 40 days or approximately 42,000 tons scheduled, this will likely impact production levels further. Nevertheless, the company remains focused on executing its strategic initiatives and navigating these challenging market conditions."
