Sunlands' Stellar Q1 2026 Earnings: A Bright Future Ahead

Sunlands, a leading online education provider in China, has just announced its impressive first quarter (Q1) 2026 earnings, beating expectations and solidifying its position as a top player in the industry. The company's revenue of RMB 14.7 million and net income of RMB 17.8 million mark their 20th consecutive profitable quarter, with a net income margin reaching an impressive 17.4%.

One of the key highlights from the quarter is the significant reduction in selling expenses, which declined by 19.5% year-over-year. This represents the largest single-quarter reduction recorded in recent years and marks the third consecutive quarter of year-over-year decline. Meanwhile, research and development (R&D) expenses rose by 5.6% year-over-year, reflecting Sunlands' continued investment in technology capacity enhancement.

While revenue declined by 9.6% year-over-year due to structural subsidies in degree- and diploma-oriented programs, as well as the company's recalibration of customer acquisition standards towards higher quality learner cohorts, Sunlands' management emphasized that this reflects progress made in cost structure optimization, operating discipline, and technology-enabled efficiency.

Sunlands' CEO, Tongbo Liu, highlighted the company's continued focus on diversifying its revenue mix. The degree- and diploma-oriented post-secondary programs contributed 17.9% of net revenues in Q1 2026, while interest-based programs, professional skills, and professional certification preparation together accounted for 67.9% of net revenues.

Liu also emphasized the importance of senior interest-based learning as an area with significant long-term opportunity. The company has further deepened its catalog within the arts, adding new courses such as colored pencil and folk music in response to learner demand. Additionally, Sunlands is exploring adjacent content directions through early-stage pilots, including language learning.

The company's innovative approach to learning extends beyond course content. A recently launched study tool allows learners to take a natural next step by visiting the landscapes, artists, and museums connected to their coursework. This allows Sunlands to deepen the learning journey and reinforce investment made by learners. Through partnerships with art galleries and cultural institutions, learners can gain a clearer sense of where sustained practice can take them.

Initial learner feedback has been constructive and generally positive, indicating that this type of learning reinforcement is an effective lever for improving both completion and repurchase rates. With its commitment to innovation, cost optimization, and revenue diversification, Sunlands appears poised for continued success in the online education market."
