Bassett Furniture Industries Delivers Solid Start to Fiscal 2026, Despite Challenging Market Conditions
In its first quarter earnings call for fiscal 2026, Bassett Furniture Industries reported consolidated sales that declined by 2.2% due to a variety of factors, including severe weather and weak residential housing activity.
Despite these headwinds, the company's Chairman and CEO, Rob Spilman, expressed optimism about the company's prospects going forward. "We've been conservative in designing our plan," he said, "but we have several initiatives in the works that are projected to save between $1.5 million and $2 million annually starting late in the second quarter."
One of these initiatives is a renewed focus on generating comp store growth through a variety of strategies, including expanded marketing efforts and new product introductions. The company has seen positive response to its updated case goods collections, as well as its recent introductions such as the Z4 Sleeper and the HideAway dining programs.
The True Custom Upholstery program, a key part of Bassett's business, showed a 6% increase in retail written sales for the first quarter. The company is also excited to introduce new opening price point upholstery collections at the upcoming April High Point Market, which offer excellent value with customized options for consumers.
However, the company did experience margin pressure on its retail business due to its decision not to pass along tariff costs until midway through the quarter. This resulted in a 170 basis point decrease in retail gross margins. Wholesale margins also decreased slightly, primarily due to lower volume in the domestic upholstery operation.
Despite these challenges, Spilman remains confident about the company's prospects going forward. "We have organized our strategic thinking around 5 key initiatives to grow the Bassett business," he said, including generating comp store growth, expanding its online presence, and improving operational efficiency.
The company also reported that it has absorbed the Bassett Outdoor line into the Lane Venture brand, which is now more than 50 years old. This move is expected to further leverage the strong reception and rich history behind Lane Venture.
