CNH Sees L-Shaped Recovery on the Horizon as Agricultural Equipment Cycle Begins to Normalize
CNH, a leading manufacturer of agricultural equipment, has reported its second quarter 2026 results, with operational improvements and advancements in precision technology capabilities. Despite challenging market conditions, the company sees encouraging developments in several key indicators that suggest an eventual recovery in the end markets.
CEO Gerrit Marx stated during the conference call that the company is making good use of this period to drive improvements in quality, sourcing, and manufacturing efficiency, which are supporting performance today while strengthening its foundation for the future. The company also continues to advance its precision technology capabilities with increasing adoption of connected and AI-enabled solutions across its installed base and dealer network.
However, overall market conditions remain challenging, particularly given pressured farmer profitability, CNH sees a need for several key indicators to normalize before a sustained recovery can be expected. These include channel inventories of new machines normalizing in line with near-term sales demand, used equipment inventories returning to healthy levels, the spread between new and used equipment values normalizing, commodity prices moving sustainably above production cost, and farmers having a profitable season behind them and confidence in another profitable season ahead.
The company notes that the industry is making good progress on the first three indicators across major regions, with dealer new and used inventories continuing to normalize, equipment fleets aging, and the price gap between new and used equipment beginning to converge. However, commodity prices remain at or below break-even levels for many growers, while fuel, fertilizer, and transportation costs remain elevated, keeping overall farm profitability under pressure.
As a result, CNH's baseline expectation is for an L-shaped recovery, with 2027 retail demand remaining broadly flat, with replacement demand continuing to carry much of the market. The company expects to increase production to better align with retail demand as inventories normalize, but notes that it will take stronger farm profitability and greater farmer confidence to support a more pronounced industry recovery.
While conditions are becoming more constructive, and several foundational elements required for the next phase of the cycle are falling into place, CNH does not yet see evidence of a sustained recovery. The company remains cautious but optimistic about the eventual recovery in its end markets, driven by improving indicators and operational efficiencies.
The conference call highlighted CNH's commitment to navigating the current challenges in the agricultural equipment cycle and positioning itself for future growth. By focusing on operational improvements and precision technology advancements, the company aims to drive performance today while strengthening its foundation for the future.
As the industry continues to navigate the recovery process, investors and stakeholders will be watching closely for signs of sustained improvement in market conditions. CNH's report provides a nuanced view of the current situation, emphasizing the need for continued patience and vigilance as the company works towards a more pronounced industry recovery.
