Community Health Systems Sees Progress in Patient Experience and Quality Care Amidst Dynamic Operating Environment

Community Health Systems (CHS), a leading provider of healthcare services, has reported significant progress in patient experience and quality care despite facing challenges in its operating environment. During the company's second quarter 2026 conference call, Kevin Hammons, Chief Executive Officer, highlighted the achievements of CHS's clinical teams, which have driven record improvements in safety and quality measures over the past few years.

In a notable example, Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana, was awarded the American College of Cardiology's HeartCARE Center National Distinction of Excellence. This designation is one of only 100 hospitals across the country to receive this recognition, with CHS's hospital being the only one in the state to achieve this honor.

The company has also seen positive movement in patient experience surveys and employee satisfaction ratings, with record response rates to its recent employee survey indicating a highly engaged workforce. However, Hammons acknowledged that "significant work still needs to be done" in these areas to drive enhanced financial performance over time and create long-term value for the organization and its shareholders.

Regarding operating performance, CHS reported Adjusted EBITDA of $330 million for the second quarter of 2026, compared with $380 million in the prior year period. The decline was primarily due to a smaller benefit from newly approved state-directed payment programs and divestitures completed over the past 12 months.

Results for the quarter included benefits from recently approved Medicaid state-directed payment programs in Indiana and Florida, which were offset by a prior period adjustment to the Arizona State-Directed Payment program and an unexpected increase in uninsured volumes. Additionally, demand for elective surgical procedures among commercially insured patients remained soft due to consumer insecurity related to geopolitical instability and inflationary pressures.

Same-store net revenue increased 2.4% over the prior year period, while same-store adjusted admissions rose by 2.9%. However, a lower surgical versus medical mix and the impact of uninsured visits offset rate gains from new state-directed payment programs, resulting in a $50 million decline in Adjusted EBITDA.

Jason Johnson, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, attributed this development to continued consumer insecurity related to geopolitical instability and inflationary pressures. Despite these challenges, Hammons emphasized that the company's ability to advance quality care and patient experience will drive enhanced financial performance over time and create long-term value for CHS and its shareholders.
