Customers Bancorp Smashes Q2 Records as AI-Driven Transformation Takes Shape
Customers Bancorp has once again delivered strong financial results in the second quarter of 2026, with a slew of records shattered across its key metrics. The company's CEO, Sam Sidhu, and CFO, Mark McCollum, took investors through the highlights during the bank's earnings call on July 24.
At the heart of Customers Bancorp's success is its differentiated strategy, which has been driving consistent financial performance and growth for some time now. This approach has allowed the company to deliver strong results across various key metrics, including total loans, deposits, and net interest income (NII).
Total loans grew 4% in the quarter and a staggering 17% year-over-year, reaching a record $18 billion. Total deposits also reached a new high, increasing by over $140 million to a record $21.7 billion. Non-interest-bearing deposits hit a second consecutive record at $6.9 billion or 32% of total deposits.
The company's commitment to maintaining pristine credit quality and robust capital levels is also noteworthy, even as it continues to grow its balance sheet modestly through share buybacks.
Customers Bancorp has been executing against four key priorities for 2026, which include operationalizing AI and automation across the bank. This effort aims to make the company the nation's leading AI-native regional bank by leveraging a repeatable cycle of creating and validating AI agentic pods that can be used in various business areas.
In particular, the company has been focusing on driving transformational change through two complementary tracks – top-down strategic initiatives and bottoms-up use cases built organically by teams. This includes a collaboration with OpenAI to embed engineers side-by-side with Customers Bancorp's team to build custom capabilities for its processes.
One of the most exciting developments is the successful piloting of a multi-agentic credit underwriting process that can enable the company to close commercial loans in seven days or less. This represents an 85% reduction in readiness to close, which should result in huge productivity and revenue gains through more business, while also delivering an enhanced client experience and confidence in the bank.
Customers Bancorp's commitment to innovation and growth is evident in its continued execution against these key priorities, with the company poised to make further progress on other fronts, including rebuilding its commercial onboarding process from scratch. As it continues to drive transformational change through AI-driven transformation, the company looks well-positioned for future success.
