DoorDash, the leading food delivery and logistics company, has just released its Q4 2024 earnings report, and the numbers are nothing short of impressive. With an $800 million person Total Addressable Market (TAM) and over 7 million daily orders from its active shoppers, it's clear that the company is just scratching the surface of its potential.
Speaking at the company's Q4 2024 earnings call, DoorDash CEO Tony Xu emphasized that both penetration and frequency are key drivers of growth for the company. Despite already being a dominant player in the US food delivery market, with single-digit percentages of overall restaurant industry sales, Xu noted that there is still much to be done. Globally, the numbers are even smaller, highlighting the immense opportunities available to DoorDash as it expands its reach.
"We're still single-digit percentages of the U.S. restaurant industry sales," Xu said during the call. "If you look globally, that number would be even smaller." The CEO emphasized that improving the product and expanding into new geographies are crucial to driving growth, and that these efforts have only just begun.
"This is what I spend the most of my time on, which is making sure how do we add more selection, how do we make the products quality better in terms of accuracy, speed reliability, how do we make it more affordable across the world and how do we improve our customer support," Xu said. "And I just don't see an end in working each one of those vectors."
DoorDash's growth strategy also extends to its foray into new markets such as grocery and retail, where the company is still in the early stages of exploration. Despite this, CEO Xu expressed confidence that these newer areas will prove fruitful, driven by a focus on building products that change behavior rather than just offering incremental improvements.
As DoorDash continues to grow its business and expand into new markets, it's clear that both penetration and frequency are key metrics to watch. With the company already boasting an impressive 7 million daily orders from its active shoppers, investors will be keeping a close eye on these numbers as they seek to gauge the success of DoorDash's growth strategy.
