FinWise Bancorp's Q2 2026 Earnings: A Mixed Bag with Credit Quality Concerns
On July 29th, FinWise Bancorp released its second-quarter earnings for 2026, highlighting a mixed performance with concerns surrounding credit quality. In a conference call, CEO Jim Noone and CFO Robert Wahlman shared the company's results, providing insight into the factors driving these outcomes.
The earnings report revealed a $0.15 per share result, which fell short of expectations due to higher provision expenses on loans where FinWise retains credit risk. Despite this, the company emphasized its proactive approach to managing credit trends and reducing risk across the portfolio. This effort led to significant reductions in non-performing asset (NPA) balances.
One key area of focus was credit quality, which saw a $22.7 million provision for credit losses in Q2 2026, compared to $10.6 million in the prior quarter. Notably, $16.7 million of this amount related to credit enhancement loans, offset by corresponding income and not affecting net results. The remaining $6 million reflected increased provisioning in the core loan portfolio, driven by losses on liquidated non-performing loans, higher reserves on classified loans, and more conservative servicing standards.
Non-performing loan balances declined from nearly $50 million last quarter to approximately $38 million this quarter, primarily due to a reduction in SBA 7 loans classified as nonaccrual. This was achieved through loan collateral resolutions and paydowns. Of the $38 million, about $19 million is federally guaranteed, while the remaining $19 million is unguaranteed.
Total net charge-offs, excluding credit-enhanced loans, were $5.2 million, slightly above the guided range of $4 million-$5 million. Net charge-offs within the core portfolio remain concentrated in a legacy pool with approximately $50 million in performing balances outstanding at the end of Q2 2026.
FinWise emphasized its proactive management of this portfolio and commitment to transparency, providing additional updates as progress is made. The company also highlighted healthy credit performance outside of this specific pool, which remains understood, finite, and actively managed.
