Hercules Capital Sees Record-Breaking Quarter, Originations Surge 35.6% Year-Over-Year
The Hercules Capital Second Quarter 2026 Financial Results Conference Call, held on July 30th, highlighted a strong quarter of record operating performance and stable credit for the company.
During the call, Scott Bluestein, CEO and Chief Investment Officer, emphasized that the three themes guiding the company in Q2 were "disciplined and conservative new underwriting, maintaining a strong and flexible balance sheet, and being proactive in terms of managing credit." As of the end of Q2, Hercules' balance sheet and liquidity position are strong, with its portfolio credit performance remaining stable.
The company reported record originations for the first half of 2026, with $2.74 billion in new debt and equity commitments, an increase of 35.6% year-over-year. This growth is a testament to Hercules' ability to navigate through periods of volatility while maintaining a disciplined approach to capital deployment.
In Q2 specifically, the company originated total new debt and equity commitments of over $927 million and gross fundings of over $647 million. The focus was on diversification across the asset base, with life sciences companies receiving approximately 59% of commitments and 45% of fundings, while tech companies received around 41% of commitments and 55% of fundings.
The company's president, Seth Meyer, noted that Hercules was able to opportunistically increase its commitments and fundings to several portfolio companies demonstrating strong performance. This strategic approach is a key differentiator for the company, enabling it to support its portfolio companies as they scale and expand their businesses.
In terms of liquidity position, Andrew Olson, CFO, stated that Hercules has been continuing to enhance its liquidity position as needed, maintaining flexibility to take advantage of market opportunities while remaining disciplined on new underwritings.
The company's investment portfolio continued to generate net investment income in Q2 that comfortably covered its base shareholder distribution by 125%. The combined business activity in the first half helped deliver new records for total investment income and net investment income for the year so far.
Overall, Hercules Capital has demonstrated a strong performance in Q2, with record-breaking originations, stable credit, and a robust liquidity position. As the company continues to navigate through market volatility, its focus on disciplined underwriting, diversification, and proactive credit management positions it well for future growth and success.
