Hilltop Holdings Sets Stage for Strong Second Half with Robust Loan Growth and Efficiency Gains

Banking powerhouse Hilltop Holdings has delivered a solid second quarter performance, with net income reaching $36.5 million, or $0.63 per diluted share. The company's PlainsCapital Bank division continued to drive growth, achieving a 1.3% return on average assets and expanding its net interest margin to 3.42%. This strong showing was underpinned by a robust loan pipeline, favourable deposit costs, and an efficiency ratio of 55%, in line with both the first quarter of 2026 and the second quarter of 2025.

PlainsCapital Bank's results were further boosted by a $1 million provision release, largely driven by improved economic conditions and a decline in non-performing assets. Despite increasing competition from both in-state and out-of-state peers, Hilltop Holdings remains optimistic about the Texas economy providing a healthy backdrop for its banking operations, with plans to invest further in the bank's strong momentum.

In contrast, PrimeLending reported a pre-tax loss of $2 million during the second quarter, as an elevated interest rate environment continued to weigh on overall industry volumes and gain on sale margins. The challenging mortgage market was also highlighted by a new all-time low share of homes being sold to first-time homebuyers. However, PrimeLending has been able to successfully lower its fixed costs, which are down approximately $10 million annualized when compared to the second quarter of 2025.

HilltopSecurities delivered a $6 million year-over-year increase in pre-tax income, primarily driven by strong quarters within wealth management and structured finance. The company's overall performance has set the stage for a strong second half, with continued investment in PlainsCapital Bank's growth momentum expected to yield positive results.
