NorthWestern Energy Shines in Q2 2026 with Strong Earnings and Merger Progress
NorthWestern Energy has reported a stellar second quarter 2026, with the company delivering strong earnings and making significant progress on its merger plans. According to the Q2 2026 financial results webinar, NorthWestern Energy's GAAP diluted EPS came in at $0.40, while non-GAAP diluted EPS was a impressive $0.50.
The company has also reaffirmed its 2026 earnings guidance range of $3.68-$3.83 and its long-term rate base and EPS growth rate targets of 4%-6%. One of the key highlights from the quarter is the receipt of approvals from the Nebraska PSC, the South Dakota PUC, and FERC for the merger, as well as completion of the final briefing in Montana.
NorthWestern Energy's President and Chief Executive Officer, Brian Bird, highlighted the company's progress on the merger during his opening remarks. He noted that the merger-related costs were included in the second-quarter earnings, which had a significant impact on the GAAP earnings. However, the non-GAAP earnings, excluding these costs, came in at $0.50, reflecting a $0.10 increase from 2025.
The company's Chief Financial Officer, Crystal Lail, provided further details on the second-quarter financial review. She noted that the year-to-date GAAP earnings were $1.43 versus $1.60 in the prior period, while the adjusted basis showed a higher figure of $1.81 versus $1.62. The CFO also attributed the decline to an unseasonably warm winter, which had a significant impact on the first quarter's results.
NorthWestern Energy also declared a dividend of $0.67 per share payable September 1st, 2026, with a record date of August 17th. This change in payment date was intended to align with Black Hills Corporation's dividend dates and simplify the closing mechanics for the merger.
The company's financial performance was driven by improved margins, net of weather impacts, offset by higher costs, depreciation, and interest expenses. The increased operating costs included $0.12 from incremental Colstrip ownership, which is expected to contribute to resource adequacy in the future.
The merger-related costs had a significant impact on the second quarter's earnings, but NorthWestern Energy remains confident about its prospects. With a strong financial performance and progress on the merger plans, the company is poised for continued growth and success.
