Preferred Bank Exceeds Expectations in Q2 2026 with Strong Net Income and Loan Production
Preferred Bank, a leading financial institution, has reported impressive results for the second quarter of 2026. In a recent conference call, Chairman and CEO Li Yu shared the company's outstanding performance, exceeding internal budget and previous year's figures.
The bank's net income for Q2 2026 stood at $33.5 million, or $2.78 per share, marking a significant improvement compared to the same period last year. This achievement is attributed to the bank's focused efforts in resolving troubled assets, which have been successfully reduced by $70 million (41.5%) and $90 million (34%), respectively.
As part of its strategy to resolve criticized loans, Preferred Bank has made significant strides, with a reserve requirement reduction on these items resulting in a lower provision expense of $1.2 million for the quarter. The bank is optimistic about resolving three more non-performing loans totaling $60 million by the end of 2026, although the timing will depend on ongoing bankruptcy cases.
The company has also reported satisfactory loan production activities, with total loans increasing by $125 million (2% in quarter basis) and net interest margin at a favorable 3.73%. The efficiency ratio remained steady at 32%, indicating effective management under an inflationary environment.
During the question-and-answer session, President and Chief Operating Officer Wellington Chen shared insights into loan pricing, citing market competition as a challenge. Despite this, he emphasized the bank's disciplined approach to acquiring quality loans that provide a sufficient return on investment.
"The market is very competitive," Wellington noted. "We try to squeeze every 10 basis points, 25 basis points out of each transaction... Having said that, a lot of uncertainties in the market, that's why we want to make sure that we are disciplined enough to continue to take on the loan that give us a certain quality loan."
Preferred Bank's strong Q2 2026 performance underscores its commitment to effective asset resolution and loan production, setting a positive tone for the remainder of the year. As the banking industry continues to navigate challenges, Preferred Bank's results serve as an inspiration to other financial institutions.
