Red Robin Reignites Momentum with Record-Breaking Quarter
Red Robin Gourmet Burgers, Inc. has proven that its momentum is anything but slowing down. In the company's second quarter 2026 earnings call, President and Chief Executive Officer Dave Pace announced significant progress across the business as it executes against its priorities under the First Choice plan.
Pace highlighted that deliberate steps taken over the past year to strengthen the guest experience, improve hospitality and execution, and invest behind traffic-driving platforms have started to pay off. The company is seeing increased guest engagement, elevated satisfaction scores, and improved restaurant-level profitability as a result of these efforts.
One notable example of this progress is the success of Red Robin's Big Yummm Burger Deal platform. This traffic driver has been resonating with guests, especially against an economic backdrop where consumers are more discerning about where they spend. The deal gives guests a clear and accessible entry point while preserving the full Red Robin experience that guests have come to expect.
According to Pace, same-store sales grew 1.3% in the quarter, with traffic effectively flat at down 20 basis points. This result outperformed the industry by 40 basis points as measured by Black Box Intelligence and represented Red Robin's best traffic performance since Q1 of 2023. The company also increased its share of visits by 80 basis points in trade areas where competitors are located.
Red Robin's disciplined approach to pricing has allowed it to build traffic and frequency while protecting the value guests associate with the brand. In fact, Q2 marked the fourth consecutive quarter in which Red Robin's average check increase was below the industry.
The company's commitment to profitability is also paying off. With a top-line momentum combined with disciplined cost management, Red Robin drove four-wall efficiency and achieved its highest second-quarter margin in four years at 14.7%. Adjusted EBITDA was in line with expectations, setting the stage for delivering against full-year financial commitments.
Additionally, Red Robin made significant strides towards strengthening its balance sheet by announcing three refranchising agreements that will collectively generate approximately $96 million in gross proceeds upon closing. This represents a major step forward for the company and provides greater financial flexibility to refinance existing debt and support long-term strategic priorities.
Overall, Red Robin's results demonstrate the effectiveness of its First Choice plan and reinforce the company's position as a leader in the fast-casual industry. As Pace noted, "We have made substantial and consistent progress across the business over the last year, and the underlying fundamentals continue to move in the right direction." With continued execution against this strategy, Red Robin is poised for sustainable results and long-term success.
