Upwork Exceeds Expectations in Q2 2026, Driven by Strong Execution and Disciplined Cost Management
Upwork, a leading online platform for freelancers and businesses, has reported strong financial results in its second quarter of 2026. In a recent conference call with investors, the company's President and Chief Executive Officer, Hayden Brown, highlighted the key drivers behind this success.
According to Brown, Upwork delivered revenue of $191.7 million at the high end of their guidance range, exceeding expectations. Adjusted EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization) also reached $64.1 million, surpassing the high end of the company's guidance range.
One of the key factors contributing to this success is Upwork's growth building blocks - SMB (Small to Medium-sized Businesses), Enterprise, and AI. The company has been driving momentum with larger clients, capturing higher-value projects, and scaling its position as the platform of choice for complex AI-enabled work.
In the SMB segment, Upwork continues to prioritize quality and customer value over volume. This strategy is paying off, with Business Plus pacing ahead of plan, and GSV (Gross Services Volume) growing 174% year-over-year as larger customers utilize Upwork for complex recurring needs.
The average GSV per active client also reached a record $5,230 in Q2, marking the eighth consecutive quarter of sequential growth in this metric. Upwork's focus on helping SMBs tap into AI technology is also reflected in the 51% year-over-year growth seen in its AI strategy and consulting category.
In Enterprise, Upwork initiated customer migrations to the new platform on schedule in June, with positive developments in customers advancing through later stages of the sales process. The company's thesis around serving larger customers with a differentiated offering is working, contributing to 7% year-over-year growth in GSV per Enterprise account.
The acquisition of Ascen also contributed to 29% year-over-year growth in GSV from employer-of-record solutions. Moving employment infrastructure in the U.S. and Canada from third-party partners to Ascen's wholly-owned entities is improving Upwork's value proposition and accelerating its sales funnel with better growth margins.
Overall, Upwork's strong execution and disciplined cost management have driven its success in Q2 2026. The company continues to expect Enterprise to achieve approximately 25% year-over-year GSV growth in 2026, demonstrating its commitment to delivering value to both clients and freelancers on its platform.
