Travelers Delivers Strong Q3 Results with Record Investment Income and Steady Progress on Strategic Initiatives

Travelers, a leading insurance company, reported an exceptional third quarter 2026 performance, boasting strong underwriting results across all segments and a record investment income. In a recent conference call, Alan Schnitzer, Chairman and CEO, highlighted the company's excellent financial results, driven by core income of $1.95 billion, or $9.18 per diluted share.

The company's underwriting performance was particularly notable, with an underlying combined ratio of 84.1% across all segments, reflecting outstanding execution in the marketplace. The Business Insurance segment saw growth in every line except property, with net written premiums reaching $5.9 billion, a 4% increase over the prior year quarter.

"Renewal premium change was 4.1%, including renewal premium change of 5.4% in our core middle market business and 7.8% in our small commercial Select business," noted Schnitzer, highlighting the segment's strong performance. "Excluding the property line, renewal premium change in the segment was 7%. Retention remained very strong at 86% and was higher or stable in every line."

In addition to its underwriting successes, Travelers also reported a record result from its investment portfolio. The company's high-quality investments delivered $908 million in after-tax net investment income, a 7% increase over the prior year quarter.

The company's strong performance enabled it to return $1.8 billion of excess capital to shareholders during the quarter, including $1.5 billion of share repurchases. Since the beginning of 2025, Travelers has returned $8 billion in capital through share repurchases, retiring 12% of the shares then outstanding.

"Our underwriting and investment results, together with our strong balance sheet, enabled us to return capital to shareholders while also investing in the business," said Schnitzer. "Adjusted book value per share at the end of the third quarter was 24% higher than at the beginning of 2025 and 15% higher than a year ago."

Travelers' strategic initiatives are also gaining momentum, with progress made across various fronts. The company's Bond & Specialty Insurance segment delivered strong growth and returns, with net written premiums increasing by 12% to $1.2 billion.

"We're pleased with the continued success of our business," concluded Schnitzer. "Our focus on delivering exceptional service to customers while driving long-term value for shareholders remains unwavering."
