3M Roars Back with Strong Q3 Performance

In its latest earnings conference call, 3M reported a strong third quarter (Q3) performance, driven by organic growth, increased operating margin, and robust free cash flow. The company's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Bill Brown, highlighted the results as evidence of progress in executing the company's strategy.

Organic growth for the quarter came in at 3.3%, while operating margin expanded to 26.2%, a 110 basis-point increase from the same period last year. Earnings per share (EPS) reached $2.50, up 12% from Q3 2025. Free cash flow also showed significant improvement, reaching $1.2 billion in the quarter. The company's efforts to return value to shareholders were evident, with $600 million distributed among dividends and share repurchases.

The integration of Madison Fire and Rescue into 3M's financial reporting was a notable development in Q3. This acquisition contributed positively to the company's results, delivering high single-digit pro forma growth and operating margins ahead of the deal model and 3M overall. Integration efforts are underway to capture synergies across distribution, international expansion, and operational performance.

As part of its value creation framework, 3M has been investing in building a stronger foundation for the company. This includes sharpening focus on priority verticals, improving R&D resource allocation, and enhancing sales force effectiveness through AI-enabled tools. The results are evident in new product launches, with 87 new products introduced in Q3, up 24% from last year.

Cross-selling also gained traction during the quarter, with $140 million in wins booked to date and another $120 million in the pipeline. This surpasses the company's original three-year goal of $100 million. In today's inflationary environment, price execution has been particularly strong, fully offsetting material and oil cost pressures.

The company's efforts to improve productivity across its manufacturing and supply chain network have paid off, with gross margins increasing by 230 basis points year over year. Cost of poor quality improved by 40 basis points, while overall equipment effectiveness rose by 20 basis points. 3M is committed to further simplifying and standardizing its operations, reshaping the portfolio, reducing risk, and improving enterprise resilience.

The company's updated guidance for the year takes into account the integration of Madison Fire and Rescue and changes in acquisition amortization reporting. Based on Q3 performance and continued strong order trends, 3M remains confident in achieving organic growth above 3.5% this year."
