Academy Sports + Outdoors Shows Resilience Amidst Inflationary Pressures, Posts Strong Q2 Results

Academy Sports + Outdoors has reported its second quarter fiscal 2027 financial results, with sales coming in at $1.6 million, a 3% increase from the same period last year. Despite facing inflationary pressures on consumers, the company managed to maintain top-line momentum and post strong results.

According to Steve Lawrence, Chief Executive Officer of Academy Sports + Outdoors, the company saw continued sales growth in its dot-com business, which increased by 12.8% during the quarter. This growth improved penetration in this channel by 110 basis points compared to last year.

However, as noted during the Q1 call, overall inflationary pressures on consumers were no longer being offset by increased tax refunds, leading to a slowdown at the end of the first quarter and into the early part of second quarter. As a result, May and June saw total sales increases of 2% and 3%, respectively, with comps down 1% and flat, respectively.

Interestingly, the company observed different traffic trends across income cohorts during Q2. Traffic from households making less than $50K annually declined by high single digits, while traffic from households greater than $100K annually accelerated to high single digits, outperforming Q1's growth.

A key highlight of the quarter was July, which proved to be Academy Sports + Outdoors' best month, with total sales up 3% and comps turning positive. This performance was largely driven by back-to-school categories, although the company faced some challenges due to tax-free weekend events shifting in four states.

The company also reported strong results across various business segments. The hardgoods side of the business performed well, with sports and recreation being the standout performer at up 6%. Within this segment, soccer gear sales surged double digits during Q2, a trend that is expected to continue throughout the year and into the next.

Additionally, the company's front end department saw significant growth driven by investments in trend-right categories like trading cards and outdoor speakers from Turtlebox. Fitness equipment also posted strong results with treadmills up high single digits during Q2 as customers prioritized health and wellness.
