Alerus Financial Corporation Surpasses $81 Million in Quarterly Revenue, Achieves Record-Breaking Earnings

Alerus Financial Corporation, a leading financial institution with nearly 150 years of history, has just announced its third-quarter results for 2026. The company's earnings conference call, held on October 29th, revealed a strong performance across various business segments.

Total revenue reached $81 million, marking the highest level in Alerus' history. This significant increase drove earnings per share up nearly 17% from the same period last year and resulted in a return on tangible common equity of 17%. The company's diversified business model, dubbed "One Alerus," continued to deliver strong results, with solid returns and balance sheet strengthening.

Alerus' President and CEO, Katie O'Neill Lorenson, emphasized the importance of consistent execution of strategic priorities and collaboration across the organization. She highlighted the successful implementation of updated fee schedules in the wealth advisory business, which better aligned pricing with services delivered while minimizing client attrition.

The company's focus on expanding institutional and high net worth relationships, adding advisors strategically across markets, and aligning its service model with clients' needs and complexity is expected to drive future growth. The success of business owner liquidity events and retirement participants demonstrates the effectiveness of One Alerus in action, deepening client relationships and building a more scalable and sustainable wealth business.

In the retirement segment, Alerus focused on optimizing operations through modernization of technology, streamlining onboarding, and reducing manual work to improve service and build capacity. The company believes its reinvestment timing is well-suited given the catalyst for consolidation expected over the next several years, positioning it for more organic growth, strategic opportunities, higher profitability, and greater operating leverage.

Banking revenue saw an 11% increase, driven by higher swap fee income and treasury management fees. The company's strategic shift towards full relationship commercial and private banking gained traction, with solid broad-based commercial loan and deposit growth. Commercial and business loans rose nearly 37% from a year ago, representing well over a third of the loan portfolio.

Alerus' teams secured new commercial clients across all markets, while synergistic deposits from retirement and wealth businesses contributed 22% of total deposits. HSA deposits grew by 9% from year-end at an average cost of just 10 basis points, providing a meaningful funding advantage. The company operates with no brokered deposits.

Alerus maintained its focus on expense discipline, investing selectively in technology and growth to improve service, expand capacity, and strengthen productivity. The company's balance sheet is stronger than a year ago, with non-performing loans at 17 basis points of total loans and non-performing assets falling from 1.13% of assets a year ago to 30 basis points. Criticized loans dropped more than 55%, and the company reported net recoveries in the quarter of 10 basis points.
