Bassett Furniture Industries Sees Encouraging Trends Amidst Economic Uncertainty
The second quarter earnings conference call for Bassett Furniture Industries provided insight into the company's performance and strategic initiatives to drive further growth. Despite operating in a challenging economic environment, Bassett reported an improvement in adjusted operating profit on slightly lower consolidated revenue.
Chairman and CEO Rob Spilman highlighted positive traffic during April and May, which contributed to a 9.5% increase in retail written sales. The company's Memorial Day promotion was particularly strong, with written sales up 14% and 4% more traffic than last year. These trends continued into June, setting the stage for a promising third quarter.
Wholesale orders were up 5.2% for the second quarter, but shipments declined by 2% as increased written sales were back-end loaded. Bassett generated $7.4 million of cash from operations during the period and saw consolidated gross margins grow by 90 basis points due to improvements in wholesale margins on slightly lower revenue.
However, the company faced higher SG&A expenses, primarily due to its growing corporate retail presence, which has a structurally higher amount of SG&A compared to the traditional wholesale model. To address this, Bassett is committed to reducing expenses by an additional $1.5 million to $2 million on an annual basis.
Spilman emphasized that the company will not simply wait for market conditions to improve but rather focus on generating higher sales within its existing store network. This approach allows for greater leverage of fixed costs, with higher average sales per store being particularly encouraging.
In addition to its financial performance, Bassett highlighted strategic initiatives aimed at driving growth and improving marketing efficiency. The company's adjusted media mix has driven more foot traffic to stores since the COVID boom, and its growing utilization of direct mail is yielding positive results.
Product introductions in 2025 have been successful, with several offerings becoming top 5 items in their respective categories. These new products complement Bassett's legacy custom programs, which remain a hallmark of its assortment.
