Bladex Surpasses Expectations in Q3 2026 with Record-Breaking Commercial Portfolio and Net Interest Income
Bladex, a leading financial institution, has announced outstanding results for the third quarter of 2026. In a recent conference call, the company's CEO, Jorge Salas, highlighted key highlights from the quarter, including a record-breaking commercial portfolio and net interest income.
The commercial portfolio reached $15 billion, a significant increase of 15% from the second quarter and 38% from a year ago. This growth was driven by strategic lending initiatives, particularly in high-grade segments where attractive arbitrage opportunities were identified. Notably, a one-year sovereign loan to the Republic of Panama contributed significantly to this growth, demonstrating Bladex's ability to execute large-scale transactions while maintaining strong credit quality.
Net interest income also reached record levels, growing 9% from the second quarter and reaching $79.8 million. This increase was largely due to lower funding costs and a temporary benefit from loan prepayments, despite lending spreads remaining under pressure. The net interest margin rose to 2.30%, further solidifying Bladex's position in the market.
Bladex's fee-generating businesses also made significant progress, with non-interest income reaching $19.3 million, a 26% increase from a year ago. This growth was driven by strong trade finance activity and the completion of four structured transactions, bringing the total to 13 for the first nine months of 2026.
Total revenues reached $99.1 million, nearly 20% higher than a year ago, while the efficiency ratio stood at 25.8%. Revenue growth has enabled Bladex to advance strategic initiatives while maintaining cost discipline, with plans to invest in budgeted initiatives next quarter and aim for an efficiency ratio of 27% by the end of the year.
Provision expense increased due to portfolio growth and additional reserve coverage on existing stage 3 exposures. However, credit performance remains solid, with net income reaching $63.2 million, a 15% increase from a year ago, and adjusted ROE at 15%. The Tier 1 ratio ended the quarter at 16.2%, both of which are at the higher end of Bladex's guidance for the year.
"This was an outstanding quarter for Bladex," said Jorge Salas during the conference call. "We delivered strong earnings while maintaining strong credit quality and preserving a strong capital position." The company's commitment to conservative credit risk management and strategic investments has positioned it for continued success in 2026."
