Centene Corporation Surpasses Q3 Expectations with Strong Performance Across Businesses
Centene Corporation, a leading health insurance company, reported strong third-quarter earnings that exceeded expectations. The company's adjusted diluted earnings per share came in at $0.58, beating previous forecasts.
The positive results were driven by outperformance in the Medicare segment and in-line performance from the Medicaid and commercial businesses. As a result, Centene has revised its full-year financial outlook upwards, expecting adjusted diluted earnings per share of greater than $5.20 for 2026.
In the Medicaid business, Centene reported a Health Benefit Ratio (HBR) of 93.6, improving sequentially by 30 basis points from the second quarter and keeping pace with its trajectory to achieve a full-year Medicaid HBR of 93.5. The company's core trend for the quarter was in line with expectations, with key drivers such as behavioral health, home health, and high-cost drugs remaining among its top areas of focus and intervention.
Notably, Centene observed another quarter of year-over-year stabilization in behavioral health trend, with a similar pattern beginning to emerge in home health. This is evidence of the impact of their cost management and policy advocacy efforts.
The company also noted that states are cleaning up eligibility ahead of OB3 implementation, including mixed impact from New York's EP program changes. In addition, Centene saw increased utilization from Children's Medical Services members in Florida ahead of the program transition, which they were able to absorb without impacting their overall trajectory.
Medicaid membership tracked largely in line with expectations at quarter end, with Centene continuing to expect an incremental step down in Q4. This is in line with their previous view that year-end 2026 membership would reflect attrition of roughly 8-9% compared to year-end 2025.
The company's CEO, Sarah London, expressed excitement about carrying the positive momentum they are producing across their businesses into 2027, and emphasized the importance of disciplined execution to finish the year strong. With this performance, Centene is well-positioned for continued growth and success in the future."
