Citi Shatters Revenue Records with 8% YoY Growth, Reporting $5.2 Billion in Net Income for Q3 2026

Citi, a leading global financial institution, has shattered its revenue records by reporting an impressive 8% year-over-year growth in the third quarter of 2026. According to Jane Fraser, Chair and Chief Executive Officer, this achievement marks the company's best quarterly revenue performance in a decade.

The success is evident across four out of Citi's five business segments: services, banking, wealth, and U.S. Consumer Cards. Notably, the services division saw a 15% growth in revenues, driven by strong performances in deposits, commercial card spend, trade loans, and cross-border activity. Assets under custody and administration also grew by 16%, further solidifying Citi's position as a leader in innovation.

"We continue to lead through innovation, bringing new real-time capabilities to our clients with the launch of Citi Token Services in the UAE and Japan and the introduction of Custody+," Fraser explained during the Q3 earnings call. This focus on innovation has yielded impressive results, as demonstrated by the significant growth in assets under custody and administration.

The company's banking business also experienced a 6% revenue growth, with notable successes in equity markets and leverage finance. Citi played key roles in several high-profile transactions, including the largest-ever IPO of an Asian-based issuer, SK Hynix, and SoftBank's $11 billion high-yield offering.

Citi's wealth segment has continued to steadily improve, with growth across all three business areas. The ROTCE (Return on Tangible Common Equity) in this division was over 14%, significantly higher than last year. Notably, the company brought in a substantial $38 billion in net new investment assets during Q3, up over 100% from a year ago.

While U.S. Consumer Cards reported flat revenues due to higher partner payments, the business still demonstrated growth, with total average loans increasing by 6%. Citi's strategic investments and acquisitions, such as the acquisition of Kard, are expected to yield benefits that will scale over time.

Citi's Q3 performance has been characterized by disciplined execution and intentional expense management. Despite pulling some planned investments and severance into this quarter, the company still achieved positive operating leverage, with expense growth held at 3%, excluding a notable item from last year. This demonstrates Citi's commitment to maintaining its competitive edge.

Additionally, Citi has announced plans for the deconsolidation of Banamex next year and has completed the sale of a 1.4% equity stake in the company, bringing the total amount divested so far to 49%. The planned IPO will take place after the deconsolidation, subject to market conditions and regulatory requirements.

Overall, Citi's Q3 performance demonstrates its ability to adapt and execute on its strategy effectively. With $5.2 billion in net income for the quarter and a strong foundation for future growth, the company is poised to continue delivering impressive results in the years ahead.
