Crown Holdings Delivers Strong Q3 Performance, Riding Global Beverage Can Demand
Crown Holdings, a leading global supplier of packaging solutions, has announced another impressive quarter with strong earnings and revenue growth, despite ongoing inflationary pressures and global economic uncertainties.
According to the company's Q3 2026 conference call transcript, Crown Holdings reported diluted earnings per share (EPS) of $2.08 compared to $1.85 in the prior year quarter, representing a 12% increase. Adjusted EPS came in at $2.39, up 7% from the same period last year. Net sales increased to $3.7 billion, driven by higher global beverage can shipments and the pass-through of higher material costs.
Global beverage can volumes surged more than 6%, with double-digit growth in Asia, 6% growth in North America, and 4% growth in Europe. This performance is a testament to the company's ability to navigate complex market conditions and deliver strong results for its customers. As Tim Donahue, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer, noted, "The company's businesses are responding well to global economic challenges to continue supporting our customers' needs as we all navigate a world of growing tensions."
The company's segment income stood at $484 million, compared to $490 million in the prior year quarter. While higher global beverage can shipments were offset by inflationary cost pressures and lower results in Transit Packaging, Crown Holdings remains confident in its outlook for beverage can demand, with full-year global growth targeting a 4-5% range.
The impact of inflationary pressures from the Middle East conflict was felt across all businesses, amounting to approximately $17 million and adjusted diluted earnings per share of $0.12. The company has included a similar headwind in its fourth-quarter estimate, acknowledging that energy, industrial gases, freight, and other costs remain elevated.
Crown Holdings' strong balance sheet, consistent free cash flow generation, and disciplined capital allocation strategy position the company well to continue investing in attractive organic growth opportunities while returning capital to shareholders. The company repurchased $81 million of its shares during the third quarter, bringing year-to-date share repurchases to $598 million.
The full-year 2026 adjusted diluted EPS outlook ranges from $8.35-$8.45, with fourth-quarter adjusted diluted EPS expected to be in the range of $1.63-$1.73. The company's guidance assumes net interest expense of approximately $355 million, exchange rates at current levels, and an effective tax rate of around 25%.
Crown Holdings' commitment to delivering strong results for its customers, combined with its focus on capital allocation and shareholder returns, makes it well-positioned to navigate the complex global economic landscape. As Kevin Clothier, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, noted, "The company is executing well, delivered another strong quarter. As we look ahead, our strong balance sheet, consistent free cash flow generation, and disciplined capital allocation strategy position us well to continue to invest in attractive organic growth opportunities while returning capital to shareholders."
