Dynex Capital Inc. Delivers Strong Liquidity and Resilience in Turbulent Markets

In a recent conference call, Dynex Capital Inc., a leading investment manager, reported on its third quarter earnings for 2026. The company's results reflect the challenges of operating in turbulent markets, but also highlight its resilience and ability to adapt to changing market conditions.

According to Smriti Popenoe, Co-Chief Executive Officer and President, "This was a pivotal quarter in the markets, and Dynex was prepared for this moment." The company had a strong liquidity position, which enabled it to maintain its position in its highest conviction trade and retain the capacity to invest as spreads moved wider. This allowed Dynex to navigate the market shocks that led to a 15.4% decline in book value to $10.91 per share, with a total economic return of negative 11.4%.

The company's portfolio operated as designed, absorbing the book value movement and limiting its downside through hedging strategies as ten-year Treasury yields rose above 5%. This resilience was made possible by Dynex's experienced team and deep and reliable financing. Additionally, the issuance of Series D preferred stock added an accretive source of permanent capital, further diversifying the company's capital base.

The market conditions in which Dynex operates are characterized by fundamental shifts driven by AI and infrastructure investment, leading to higher volatility and yields in bond markets and wider spreads in Agency MBS. However, these moves were not driven by issues within the Agency MBS sector itself but rather by broader macroeconomic factors.

Despite the challenges, Dynex sees an attractive investment opportunity in Agency MBS, with absolute real yields being compelling and mortgage spreads still historically wide. The value of the borrower's prepayment option is substantially lower, refinancing incentive is extremely limited, and most of the mortgage universe has already extended substantially. This leads to more stable duration and expected cash flows, as well as an improved convexity profile for the mortgage market.

For Dynex, this presents a significant moment for growth and resilience. The company has been building a scaled and resilient investment platform with greater capacity to deploy capital and capture attractive returns. This ability to adapt and evolve in response to changing market conditions positions Dynex well for the future.

As Byron Boston, Chairman and Co-Chief Executive Officer, noted, "We've been building a more scaled and resilient Dynex with the liquidity and flexibility to navigate market and operating shocks. As we grow, our investment platform becomes increasingly durable with greater capacity to deploy capital and opportunistically capture attractive returns."

Dynex Capital Inc.'s third quarter earnings report highlights its commitment to resilience and adaptability in the face of market challenges.
