First American Financial Corporation Sees Strong Q3 Earnings Despite Challenging Market Conditions
First American Financial Corporation has announced its third quarter earnings, with the company reporting a 5% increase in adjusted earnings per share to $1.78 compared to the same period last year. The strong performance was driven by the commercial business, which saw significant growth across various asset classes.
The National Commercial Services division generated its highest third-quarter revenue on record, with eight out of 11 asset classes growing year-over-year. Average revenue per order also reached a new high for the fifth consecutive quarter, while the company closed 22 transactions that generated over $1 million in premium during the period - a significant increase from last year's 12 deals.
However, the residential side of the business remains more challenging, with purchase revenue decreasing by 3% due to affordability constraints on existing home sales. Refinance revenue also decreased by 1%.
The company attributes the higher mortgage rates, which have increased approximately 100 basis points to 7.5%, as one of the contributing factors to this slowdown in residential origination. Mark Seaton, CEO of First American Financial Corporation, stated that while higher rates may extend the challenging environment, they also provide an opportunity for the company to make transformational changes to its business.
One such change is the accelerated rollout of the AI-native title and settlement platforms. Endpoint, one of these platforms, has made significant progress in the third quarter. The platform expanded to additional users in the Seattle metro area through wave two of its Washington pilot. Every day provides valuable learnings about both the product and how the company trains its team to work effectively on the new platform.
The automation rate on Endpoint increased from 30% in the first quarter to 34% in the second quarter, reaching a high of 42% in the third quarter. This shift towards automation represents a fundamental change in how title and settlement work gets done, with an increasing focus on managing exceptions, customer interactions, and creating a more consistent and efficient experience.
Mark Seaton emphasized that these changes will enable the company to provide less time processing files and more time spent with customers while delivering a more consistent and efficient experience. The rollout of Endpoint is expected to accelerate nationally in 2027, with the majority of direct division revenue running through Endpoint by the end of next year.
