Flexsteel Industries Shows Resilience Amidst Challenging Macroeconomic Environment
The first quarter fiscal year 2027 earnings conference call for Flexsteel Industries revealed a tale of resilience and strategic execution amidst a challenging macroeconomic environment. Despite significant inflationary pressures across the supply chain, the company's team delivered solid sales growth and profitability while advancing key initiatives that drive long-term shareholder value.
According to Derek Schmidt, President and Chief Executive Officer, net sales increased 3.2% compared to the prior year, marking the company's 12th consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth. Excluding the impact of Flexsteel's exit from the Homestyles ready-to-assemble furniture category, sales in its continuing Flexsteel branded business grew approximately 5%. Orders also increased by around 5%, and the ending backlog rose 8.2% compared to the prior year.
These trends demonstrate the company's growth momentum extends beyond reported sales. The underlying strength of Flexsteel's business is evident, driven by complementary initiatives such as new product introductions, share gains with strategic accounts, and expansion in its health and wellness category. These efforts are performing well despite continued softness in the broader furniture market.
The company's profitability was solid, although impacted by an unfavorable foreign currency translation loss late in the quarter. Reported GAAP operating margin was approximately 6%, below Flexsteel's guidance range of 6.5%-7%. However, excluding the $800,000 unfavorable foreign currency impact, operating margin was solid and in line with expectations.
Schmidt emphasized that significant inflationary pressures are creating difficult operating conditions for the industry. Ocean transportation rates have nearly doubled over the past six months, while domestic transportation costs have surged due to higher diesel fuel prices. Materials and sourced products costs have also increased. Despite these challenges, Flexsteel's teams continue to respond with urgency and discipline.
The company is taking steps to mitigate these pressures by identifying cost savings opportunities, improving productivity, managing its product portfolio, and implementing modest pricing actions. As a result, Schmidt expressed encouragement about the underlying operating performance and ability to largely offset inflationary headwinds to maintain healthy margins.
