GM Shifts into High Gear: Company Posts Strong Q2 Results, Raises 2026 Guidance
General Motors (GM) has reported another solid quarter, driven by the tremendous appeal of its product portfolio, the agility of its team, and disciplined execution across the business.
In a conference call on July 21st, GM's Chair and CEO Mary Barra highlighted the company's strong performance, citing customer demand in North America as steady, with pricing consistent for their pickups and SUVs. Despite lower than target inventories for most of the year, GM's share of the U.S. full-size pickup market stands at more than 42%, a significant lead over its closest competitor.
Barra also noted that the company has achieved its best quarter and first half ever for Super Cruise-equipped vehicles, with strong commercial demand helping to deliver record full-size pickup deliveries in their fleet business. GM's U.S. incentive spend has remained well below the industry average for more than three years.
The company's international operations were also profitable, with an 8.6% EBIT adjusted margin in North America that is up two and a half points from a year ago. This performance has driven 70 basis points of total company margin expansion over the last three years, while GM's broader peer set has seen margin reduction by 400 basis points.
GM's operating discipline has been a key driver of structural improvement in its adjusted automotive free cash flow generation, which has improved from $3 billion-$5 billion annually on average over the last decade to consistently above $10 billion since 2022. The company expects these trends to continue strengthening performance into 2027 and beyond.
The next major launch for GM is set to further separate it from key competitors when the next generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra light-duty pickups begin arriving in showrooms in December. These trucks will deliver improved ride quality, power, durability, and towing capability, with significantly elevated exterior and interior design to increase their presence, refinement, and appeal.
GM's Chair and CEO Mary Barra concluded the conference call by stating that the company is committed to delivering strong results this year and going forward. With a strong product portfolio, growing software and services revenue, lower warranty costs, reduced EV losses, increased operating efficiency, and new revenue opportunities on the horizon, GM appears poised for continued success.
