HEI Sets Sail for Stronger Waters: Q3 2026 Earnings Call Highlights
Electricity provider HEI made significant strides in its third quarter 2026 earnings call, showcasing a resilient and financially strengthened company. CEO Scott Seu took the stage to discuss key strategic priorities and regulatory processes, highlighting measurable progress across objectives communicated since the Maui wildfires of 2023.
HEI has worked diligently to improve its financial strength and ensure long-term ability to serve and invest in communities, resulting in upgrades from rating agencies and substantial milestones in wildfire mitigation. The company's liquidity stands at more than five times pre-wildfires levels, providing significant optionality for future payments under the historic settlement agreement upheld by the Hawaii Supreme Court.
A notable achievement was restoring access to capital through successful debt and equity offerings, while implementing a wildfire mitigation plan that significantly lowered utility-caused ignition risk. HEI's insurers recognized them as among the best in class regarding wildfire risk mitigation, leading to a 52% decline in commercial wildfire premiums since the Maui wildfires.
In addition to these strategic advances, HEI demonstrated strong execution during elevated storm activity in August and September, with crews quickly restoring power after severe weather damage. Over 95% of affected customers were restored within three days following Hurricane Lala's passage.
President Shelee Kimura, Senior Vice President and CFO Paul Ito, and other senior management members joined Seu on the call, emphasizing HEI's commitment to safe, affordable, reliable, and resilient electricity services.
These highlights from Q3 2026 underscore HEI's efforts to strengthen its financial position while serving communities effectively. As the company moves forward with a more streamlined business model, focused solely on regulated electric utility operations, investors took note of these strategic milestones achieved under challenging circumstances.
With successful securitization planned to cover wildfire mitigation costs and other resilience spending, HEI appears well-positioned for continued execution of its strategies, ultimately benefiting customers through reliable electricity services.
