IBM Accelerates Growth with Strong Q3 2026 Performance
IBM (NYSE: IBM) has reported a robust third quarter 2026 performance, with revenue growth accelerating to 6% above its base case laid out in July. The company's Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer, Arvind Krishna, attributed this success to disciplined execution across segments, led by software growth of 9%, infrastructure growth of 5%, and modest improvement in consulting.
Arvind Krishna highlighted the strength of IBM's portfolio, stating that technology innovation in hybrid infrastructure and super intelligence is leading to better business performance. He emphasized that this quarter's results reinforce the company's strategic choices over the last several years to advance as a software-led hybrid cloud and AI platform company.
In software, Red Hat again grew 11% with bookings growth accelerating back to the high teens. OpenShift ARR growth accelerated to over 30%, driven by organizations scaling super intelligence applications and agents into production, validating IBM's view that they remain in the early stages of a long-term application modernization cycle.
Transaction processing grew 10%, underscoring the strategic importance of the mainframe and confirming the company's view that softness seen in the second quarter was due to timing rather than underlying demand. Data growth reached 20% supported by continued strength in Confluent, while infrastructure was up 5% driven by momentum in distributed infrastructure, growing 32% this quarter.
AI continues to increase demand for storage, with IBM gaining share through differentiated offerings across FlashSystem, Storage Fusion, Tape, and IBM Z storage. The company introduced new single-frame and rack-mount IBM Z systems in July that help clients address data center space, cost, and deployment constraints without compromising performance or security.
Client response has been strong, contributing to the highest mid-range revenue launch in IBM Z this quarter in nearly two decades. Arvind Krishna also discussed the company's AI strategy, stating that enterprise AI is entering its next phase. He emphasized that deploying more models or building more agents will not be enough and that the advantage will belong to a company that can operate AI securely, efficiently, and sustainably across the enterprise.
The company's results demonstrate the strength of its portfolio and the continued value clients place in mission-critical platforms. IBM's confidence in both its strategy and the outlook for the balance of the year remains high, as they continue to execute on their plan to advance as a software-led hybrid cloud and AI platform company.
