IBM Powers Ahead: Q2 2026 Results Showcase Strength in Software and AI

IBM's second-quarter 2026 earnings presentation revealed a mixed bag of results, with some areas falling short of expectations. However, the company's commitment to transparency and its confidence in the strength of its business remained unchanged.

In his opening remarks, Arvind Krishna, IBM's Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer, acknowledged that the technology spending environment remains dynamic and requires continuous evolution. He emphasized IBM's unique value proposition in helping clients realize value from AI adoption through secure, cost-effective, and scalable solutions.

One of the bright spots in IBM's Q2 performance was its software business, which constitutes nearly 45% of total revenue. While there were some challenges in a CapEx-sensitive area of the portfolio, the majority of the company's software revenue is recurring in nature and delivered healthy growth in the quarter.

IBM's AI strategy continues to be a key differentiator for the company. The company's focus on hybrid, sovereignty, and trust aligns with its expertise in enterprise-grade operational control, allowing clients to orchestrate agents across models, clouds, and on-premises environments while maintaining control over proprietary data.

The introduction of Watsonx Orchestrate has been particularly impactful, providing clients with a control plane to build, manage, and govern AI agents. This offering, combined with Red Hat, gives clients a foundation to run inference and applications on any infrastructure. Additionally, Bob is an entry point into the developer ecosystem, facilitating the creation of enterprise-ready AI applications and agents.

Confluent delivers real-time governed data to models and agents across IBM's control plane, while Concert provides enterprises with a unified view of application health, security, compliance, and operational performance. The company's consulting expertise and technology offerings have proven essential in helping clients move from adoption to deployment, driving growing demand for generative AI.

Although challenges were faced in the infrastructure segment this quarter, IBM's z17 platform is experiencing its best refresh cycle in reported history. Overall, IBM's Q2 results demonstrate its commitment to innovation and growth, with a strong focus on software and AI solutions that deliver value to clients and drive shareholder returns.
