Key Tronic Sees Clear Path to Improved Financial Performance Amid Q1 Challenges
Spokane, WA - Despite facing significant challenges in its first quarter of fiscal 2027, Key Tronic remains optimistic about its future prospects. The company's Chief Financial Officer, Tony Voorhees, highlighted the opportunities for growth and improvement during a recent investor conference call.
"Our backlog has grown significantly," said Voorhees, "and we are taking decisive actions to improve our cost structure and address the constraints that limited our performance during the quarter."
Key Tronic reported total revenue of $98.7 million for Q1 2027, a slight decrease from $98.8 million in the same period of fiscal 2026. However, customer demand remained strong, with a significant increase in the company's backlog to $245.9 million - up 76% from the same period in fiscal year 2026.
The company attributed the revenue constraint to tightening credit availability and liquidity pressures across the global supply chain, which delayed approximately $18 million of its shipments during the quarter. Despite this setback, Voorhees emphasized that these delays were primarily a constraint on Key Tronic's ability to convert demand into revenue, rather than a lack of customer demand.
Key Tronic's gross margin was 2.5% in Q1 2027, compared to 8.4% in the same period of fiscal year 2026. The decline in gross margin was due to several factors, including excess labor costs and operating inefficiencies at the company's Mexico and U.S. facilities, as well as inventory sales with no margin contribution and manufacturing cost variances.
However, Voorhees noted that Key Tronic is actively addressing its cost structure and expects margins to improve in the coming quarters. The company is streamlining its U.S.-based workforce, which is expected to reduce labor costs by approximately $8 million annually. Additionally, Key Tronic is exploring new sources of capital to support growth and ease supply chain financing constraints.
While the delayed shipments and associated drop in revenue and margins had a significant impact on Key Tronic's bottom line, Voorhees remains confident about the company's future prospects. "We believe these actions, together with the new business we are winning, provide a clear path towards improved financial performance as we move through fiscal 2027," he said.
