Loop Industries Delivers on Cost Control and Paves the Way for Commercialization Success
Loop Industries has made significant strides in its second quarter 2027 earnings call, showcasing a renewed focus on cost control and laying the groundwork for commercialization success. The company's Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Daniel Solomita, led the discussion, highlighting key developments in their major commercialization project in India.
The Indian joint venture with Ester Industries has made the decision to reduce the capacity of the first facility from 70,000 kilotonnes per annum to 45,000 kilotonnes per annum. This strategic move will significantly lower the capital cost of the facility and subsequently decrease debt and equity financing needs. Toyo Engineering is currently working on finalizing a new cost estimate for the project.
The smaller facility is expected to provide attractive economic returns due to Loop's low-temperature and no-pressure-added technology, which produces virgin-quality PET resin and polyester fiber at very low operating costs. The Indian facility will be located in a low-cost environment, offering access to plentiful textile waste. This decision also allows for a faster construction timeline.
Loop is engaged in positive discussions with a major bank in India regarding the project debt facility. The team from the bank has completed the technical due diligence portion of the TDD study, and Loop successfully passed the technology assessment. This achievement will serve as documentation for the loan to secure funding for the debt piece in India.
The company's focus on cost control has resulted in a year-over-year reduction of $800,000 in cash operating expenses for the quarter, with a run rate that continues to decline into the third quarter. The savings are attributed to targeted reductions in personnel, insurance, and other operating expenses, as well as the waiver of cash compensation by outside directors.
As of August 31st, Loop reported total available liquidity of $1.9 million. The company's special committee is actively working with advisors to evaluate a range of financing alternatives, including equity, debt, and non-dilutive options. Rescaling the first commercial facility in India will directly lower the project's overall capital requirements and reduce Loop's required equity contribution.
With all key elements of the project in place, including an experienced joint venture partner, secured land, advanced engineering designs, reliable feedstock sourcing, and strong customer demand, Loop Industries is well-positioned for success. The company's ability to adapt and make strategic decisions will be crucial in driving commercialization forward.
