Medallion Financial Corp Achieves Strong Q3 2026 Earnings Driven by Growth Strategy

The third quarter of 2026 saw Medallion Financial Corp deliver impressive earnings results, driven by the company's growth strategy in both its recreation (rec) and home improvement segments. The approach has focused on pricing competitively, leveraging long-term relationships, and developing new partnerships to boost market share.

Andrew Murstein, President and Chief Executive Officer of Medallion Financial Corp, highlighted that volumes in the home improvement segment grew at an accelerated rate, reaching $146.3 million - a significant increase of $86.6 million over the same period last year. This marks a 18% growth rate, outpacing the rec segment's growth of 28.5%. While both segments have shown growth, Murstein emphasized that their strategy aims to achieve market share with better-performing credits, producing larger earnings and maintaining market-leading returns.

Medallion Financial Corp has set a goal to grow its assets from $3 billion to $5 billion over the next few years. The company is confident in achieving this goal due to its business model, team expertise, and competitive market positioning. However, the growth comes at a cost - primarily through increased provision of credit losses, which affects net interest income (NIM). Despite the NIM compression resulting from the faster growth rate of their home improvement book, Murstein expressed confidence that the company's strong origination activity will be coupled with improved credit profiles and still market-leading returns.

The company relies on a proven funding model using brokered deposits, which provide predictable maturities without any run risk. However, these brokered deposits are more expensive than core deposits. Medallion Financial Corp is constantly evaluating alternatives to lower its cost of funds. In the third quarter, the company originated more non-brokered time deposits than in previous periods, with a significant increase in their balance.

Medallion Financial Corp's strategic approach has allowed it to position itself for long-term success and enhance earnings through strong origination activity and improved credit profiles. As they continue on this path, the company is well-positioned to achieve its goals of growing assets and maintaining market leadership in returns.
