NextEra Energy Storms Ahead: Delivering Value and Resilience in a Turbulent Quarter
NextEra Energy, a leading provider of clean energy solutions, has delivered a strong third quarter performance, with adjusted earnings per share increasing 9.7% year-over-year (YoY). This impressive result is a testament to the company's commitment to executing its broader strategy and delivering value to customers across both its regulated and long-term contracted businesses.
During the conference call, John Ketchum, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer of NextEra Energy, highlighted the company's resilience in the face of adversity. He paid tribute to the employees, contractors, mutual assistance crews, first responders, and community partners who worked tirelessly to restore power after Hurricane Isaias devastated Northwest Florida.
NextEra Energy's preparedness and response efforts were nothing short of remarkable. The company assembled a restoration workforce of approximately 17,000 men and women from 29 states, pre-positioning crews, equipment, and supplies ahead of the storm to ensure that restoration could begin as soon as conditions were safe.
The results speak for themselves: by Tuesday, NextEra Energy had restored power to more than 97% of customers affected. Early forensic analysis also shows that investing in a stronger, smarter, and more storm-resilient grid has made a significant difference. Not a single hardened transmission or distribution pole failed during Isaias, and underground neighborhood power lines performed approximately 14 times better than overhead lines.
NextEra Energy's smart grid technology also avoided approximately 140,000 outages. While these investments do not make the grid hurricane-proof, they have undoubtedly reduced both the number and duration of outages, enabling customers to get their lives back to normal faster.
The company's commitment to delivering value to its customers is clear. NextEra Energy has more than 12 ways to deliver value across its regulated and long-term contracted businesses. These efforts are yielding impressive results, with adjusted earnings per share increasing 9.5% YoY through the first nine months of the year.
NextEra Energy's strong performance is a testament to the company's leadership team and employees' hard work and dedication. As John Ketchum noted, 'It is our people who make the biggest difference.' The company's focus on innovation, resilience, and customer value positions it well for success in an ever-changing energy landscape.
